This will apply to the 200+ countries where the GSM is in operation. There are many different networks/service providers around the world, so why would you want to be forced to use just one of them. However, once your phone is unlocked you might then be tempted to obtain a SIM card from another provider who has cheaper rates - the choice is now yours!
