PlayFon provides services to millions of subscribers in Russia, Sweden and the UK using IBM platform

May 19, 2005 Moscow: PlayFon, the leading Russian provider of wireless entertainment, announced choosing IBM platform as the base of its IT-infrastructure to implement quick and safe delivery of mobile content to more than 130 million subscribers in Russia, Sweden and the UK.

The cluster based on more than twenty servers IBM eServer xSeries 346 processes the orders of mobile content such as Java and Mophun games, video, logos, MP3 files and polyphonic tunes. End users order content, stored in PlayFon’s database, not only through the portals www.playfon.ru and wap.playfon.ru but also via 2500 Internet-sites, periodicals and cell-phone outlets. The average load on the cluster amounts to 15-20 million requests daily with the peak demand of 800 requests per second.

“Effective and smooth performance of the scalable infrastructure devised to satisfy all the needs of hundreds of thousands of our clients, is critical for our company. IBM technology meets all our requirements to server systems”, - Vladimir Borodin, PlayFon vice-president said.

PlayFon’s staff has a great experience in setting, maintaining and balancing the IBM eServer xSeries based fault-tolerant systems. The equipment is supplied by IMS Computers, IBM’s business-partner and reseller.

“High reliability of the IBM servers and their compatibility with hardware and software tools from other brands, handy technical support, quick equipment supply and IBM’s great experience in setting fault-tolerant systems and its expertise in cluster technologies, defined our choice of strategic partner in building our technical platform”, Vladimir Borodin added.

Scalability of IBM systems is of fundamental importance for PlayFon. In the first part of 2005 the provider starts offering its services in high-demanding 3G networks of the UK and Sweden. IBM platform is a solid basis for future PlayFon’s growth taking into account the future expansion of 3G networks in Russia.

“IBM servers are extremely popular in Russia thanks to innovative technologies, unique architecture, high reliability and manageability of the systems. We are pleased that our production is used in a new, high-tech, fast growing wireless content industry. We are sure that fault-tolerant and highly reliable cluster solutions from IBM will help PlayFon to optimize its business-process and to solidify its leading position in the industry”, Yevgeny Maximov, IBM eServer xSeries sales department manager said.
