Hi,
I have a NEC E228 cellphone. I am trying to install the downloading software, but for some reason it’s not working. I have the original CD that came with the phone.
I wonder if it’s possible to download the software from the Internet?

Hi Naaman,
It is not easy to sort this problem out. I will try to give you some suggestions, but if you cannot get the downloading to work, then I think you should discuss this at the store where you bought the phone. The store has a responsibility to offer you advice if you cannot use the software, and maybe the information supplied with the phone was poor.
There appear to be several places that sell a CD and USB cable for downloading. For example, these accessories are advertised on the UK’s official 3 website at:

I see that the CD information states: “Compatible with Windows 98 2nd, 2000, XP, 2003 only”. So I assume you are using one of those Operating Systems?
Looking around the mobile phone Forums, I see that the NEC E228 software & driver is available as a free download from an Italian website:

When you get to this page, click on the file “Software” This will take you to the next window that says: “NEC E228 file tranfere tool” Click on this filename to download the software for the e228.
This file comes as a zipped folder, so you first UNZIP the download.
Then plug your phone into the computer via the USB lead. It should say something like “new device detected” and give the name of the appliance.
The computer should go into Wizard mode. You need to give the wizard directions to the following folder:
unzipped folder\nec e228\e228 drivers\nece228usb. (Unzipped folder being the name of the driver folder you unzipped).
I do know, from what I have read in the Forums, that many e228 owners have experienced a lot of confusion and problems getting this download software to work on their phones. It could be that the software download from the Italian website is exactly the same as the version you already have on your CD.
It seems to me that this problem is really a fault of the Service Providers, as they have not given enough information to customers. There is some information in the e228 Product Manual, so read that as well, and see what other manuals and information is on the CD.

Your e228 supports high-speed data communication rates for your PC via a USB connection. PC Connection requires e228 PC Synchronisation and File Transfer software, as well as a USB data cable (available as an accessory). To install the software, attach the USB cable between your e228 and a PC, and install the e228 USB driver from the “Utilities/Tools” section of your e228 CD-ROM (also available as an accessory). Then to discover how this technology can be used with your e228, please refer to Connections section on page 107.
Data exchange is used to allow the transfer of data files between the phone memory (internal or external memory stick) and a PC. To use this functionality, you must first install the 228 PC File Transfer Tool. To install the software, refer to the Software manual on the optional CD-ROM accessory.
USB is a simple method of connecting your e228 to a PC through a cable to achieve fast data transfer rates. Connecting your e228 to a PC with a USB cable enables the PC to use your e228 just like a modem to establish a dial-up connection to an Internet Service Provider. When used in 3G coverage, the USB connection may provide a much faster transfer rate than a standard modem. A USB connection also enables data transfer between your e228 and a PC. Refer to ‘To Transfer Data between the phone and a PC’ on page 109 for details. A USB connection can also be used to synchronise your Contacts, Calendar and To Do list between your e228 and PC.
* Your e228 may not be supplied with a USB cable or PC Synchronisation and Transfer software. These are available as accessories.
* When using the USB cable for the first time, ensure the USB Drivers are installed. See the Software Manual on the CDROM for further instructions.
* Check that your operator allows use of your e228 as a modem to connect to the Internet. Please contact 3 for further details.
