Please, any information on setting up IrDA to transfer pictures to IBM think Pad 390E? Pictures won’t send, but otherwise fully sync and connected. Any troubleshooting tips appreciated.

Hi Malcolm,

I have looked around to try and see if there are any particular IrDA problems with the ThinkPad, but I can’t see anything obvious.

I might have understood your problem better if you said you couldn’t make any connection by the IrDA port, but as you can connect and sync by it, then it doesn’t appear to be a problem with the hardware.

I assume that:
(1) You have the correct and latest drivers installed from IBM and for Windows, and that the phone file management software is all installed on the ThinkPad (have you only partially installed the phone software, for example?). It might also be worth checking if there is an updated version of the phone software - you can sometimes download this directly from the manufacturer’s website. I have noted that in a few cases the software that comes on the CD can be at fault.

(2) When trying to transfer the pictures, have you activated the IR port correctly on the phone and on the computer? (I assume you have done so, as otherwise it would be clear they weren’t talking to each other)

(3) Do you have the 2 devices close enough for good data transfer (no more than one metre), and you are not performing the operation in bright sunlight?

(4) Is it possible to reduce the speed of the Infrared port in your ThinkPad? If you can, then try setting it to say 115.2 kbps.

(5) Is there anything odd about the files you are trying to transfer? I assume they are in a standard picture format like JPEG.

If everything else seems to be in order, then it is not easy to see what the problem might be, You don’t say which phone you are using to send the pictures, and I guess there might just be some quirky compatibility problem between the 2 devices, perhaps a mismatch of the data speeds that causes the link to become unstable.

The only simple thing that comes to my mind is what are these pictures you are trying to send? Are they pictures you have taken yourself, or are they downloaded from a web/wap site? Remember that if they are copy protected pictures you will not be able to transfer them.

I don’t feel I have offered you much help, but let me know if there are any symptoms that you can identify, such as error messages, and perhaps the cause of your problem will become clearer.
