Hi Shona,

You do not say which phone you have. However, they usually all follow a similar procedure to set up call divert.

You will find that there is a call divert setting in the phone’s menu system. You will need to find your way around the menus, scrolling up or down, until you come across it. After selecting call divert you will then be given several options, to choose how you want the call to be dealt with, and you simply set the one that suits you.

I think the best way to check this yourself is to look it up in the phone’s User Guide, which you should have received with your phone. If you do not have the User Guide, then an electronic copy can usually be downloaded onto a computer from the phone manufacturer’s website, or from your Service Provider’s website. It is always worth checking out these sorts of details in the User Guide, because it will enable you to understand more about what your phone can do, and you will then get better use from it.

I hope this helps you, but if you need more help then let me know the phone model you have and I will try to be more specific.

I have a Sprint Sanyo and it is not in user guide. No one at Sprint has the info. They say forward all calls but I want to forward only a select few.

Please help.

From Shona:

The Sprint Treo 650 offers an option from novosec.com with a program called smart filter. Have you heard of it?

It seems it has a program to download to selectively call forward. Have you heard of this??

Does it do what I ask? Sprint knows nothing of it.

Hi Shona,

I have taken a look at the Sanyo Sprint. I am not sure exactly which model you have, as it seems there are at least 5 models that carry this name. I downloaded 2 of the User Guides for these phones to check what you said: the MM-7400 and VM-4500. It appears to be true what you say, that you can set the call forward (or call divert as it is also referred to) to transfer all your calls to another number. The reason for this is usually that a boss might want to send all her/his calls to their secretary while he/she is in a meeting, or you might want to send your calls to a friend while you are at the dentist.

I agree that you might not want to transfer all your calls to one number, as some of them may be personal, but I think that your phone does not have the option to set up multiple forwarding numbers. The easiest way to check, which options you have available on your phone, is to select the call forward option on your phone’s menu, and then to see what choice you have of where you can forward your calls. If you are only offered one number to which you can divert your calls, then I am afraid that this is all you will be able to do.

I know that several other models, particularly the more expensive smartphones, have a choice of sending calls to different destinations. For example, calls of one category can be sent to voice mail, while others can be sent to another number. However, I do not think that your phone will have this option, and I believe that is why you cannot find any information about how you can set up different destinations for your call forwarding.

I am sorry that I cannot be more optimistic than this, but if call forwarding was one of your priority features, then you should have asked questions about this before deciding which model to buy. If you want me to make more enquiries then please let me know the model number of your phone, and I will try to help you further.

We do try our best to resolve the problems that our website visitors encounter, so please get back to me if you want to discuss this or any other issue.

Hi Shona,

I took a look at the Novosec SMARTFilter software on their website, and I also checked availability on the www.handango.com website. There are a couple of points I can make:

(1) If you read the details of what Novosec are saying, it seems that this program will divert or forward selected (blocked) calls to your mailbox or another number, which is what you are looking for. However, it is not clear how flexible this is, for example you may only be able to forward calls to one number. If you download the SMARTFilter manual at: http://www.novomobile.com/wheretobuy.php#sfpphoneedition

You can see that the only mention about Call Forwarding is the following quote from page 3 of the manual:

‘Make sure that you have enabled call forwarding to your mailbox or any other phone number that you want the dropped calls to be forwarded to. You can check the settings under Programs -> Settings -> Telephony -> Call Forwarding.’

(2) The Treo 650 uses the Palm OS platform, but I see that SMARTFilter is only available for Windows Mobile for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile for Smartphone (this is clear from the Novosec website, and from doing searches on the Handango site). So I cannot see how you can use SMARTFilter on the Treo 650?

I think I am right in what I say above, but please check it out yourself.

From Shona:

Are you sure I cannot use smart filter on the Treo 650? It is for MS for Windows and the program is offered on the sprint web for the Treo??

Hi Shona,

I guess I must be missing some point here? I went to the 2 Palm websites: http://www.palmsource.com, and http://software.palmone.com

I found no information about SMARTFilter on these sites, or by using the link to their software store.

Also, I cannot find any website that mentions the information you refer to. Can you please copy the website address (or page address) where you saw this program being offered for the 650, and I will get back to you. I can’t really comment without having read the details you have seen.

However, I still believe that SMARTFilter is not compatible with the PALM OS. Maybe there is a version for Palm, but I would expect this to have been listed on the Novosec site.
