Motorola RAZR V3 mobile phone
Skip contentMotorola V3 is a quad band cameraphone, which means it is suitable for global roaming. The thing that first strikes a potential buyer is that this mobile phone is very stylish, with a sleek clamshell style body, and it is obvious that the model’s name of “Razor” (or RAZR) refers to the very slim profile of the phone, which at 14 mm must make it about the thinnest mobile around. The outer casing of the original version of this phone has an attractive silver finish (made from anodised aircraft-grade aluminium), but there are later versions in black and hot pink which may suit you better. It is likely that just the appearance of the V3 will attract many admirers to buy this handset, as its shape and finish gives it a clean and space age feel. Even the keypad area has a metallic theme, since the keys are designed into an almost flat nickel-plated sheet, with the numbers, letters and symbols being etched into the surface. The gaps between the keys are traced out in artistic lines, partly to separate them, but also so that the backlight is able to shine through to illuminate the keys in the dark.
Although is it very thin there are still a lot of features packed into this phone. Among the important specifications that users will appreciate are the phone’s integrated Bluetooth™ connectivity technology, GPRS and WAP data handling, playback and downloading of video clips, MMS multimedia messaging, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, Java™ enabled, voice control, active flip, an e-mail client, and a good selection of polyphonic and MP3 ringtones.
In common with many other clamshell designs, the V3 has dual LCD displays for internal and external use. The inner display is a very large active matrix TFT screen, which has amongst the highest degrees of resolution available at 176 x 220 pixels, and this display is also capable of currently the best standard of colour reproduction, being able to display up to 262,144 different colours. The external display is a passive CSTN screen, but it still has a pretty useful 96 x 80 pixels of resolution, and also has the advantage of being a colour display offering up to 4,096 different colours. This outer screen shows you the time and various phone status information, as well as giving the incoming call details, so you can check who is calling before opening the phone. This outer screen also acts as a viewfinder when taking self-portraits, and this can be performed while the phone is in its closed position. Another useful asset is that this phone supports photo ID and a picture phonebook, so you get to see a picture of your caller for instant recognition.
The V3 has an integrated camera of VGA quality, with its lens located just above the external display. Depending on what the photographs are to be used for, this camera offers you a choice of 3 resolutions: MMS (160 x 120 pixels), Medium (320 x 240 pixels), or High (640 x 480 pixels). The camera also provides the user with a choice of several light settings, to assist you to get the best possible exposure in the light conditions when taking a shot; the settings available are: Automatic, Sunny, Cloudy, Indoor (Home), Indoor (Office), or Night. In addition there is a 5 level manual adjustment for the exposure, so that you are able to fine-tune it, one way or the other, to get the best picture. The phone can also download and play video clips, and receive them as part of MMS messages, although these clips can only extend to about 10 seconds each, and there is no opportunity to make video clips yourself as this phone does not have a video recording capability.
Multimedia messaging is another useful feature of the V3, and this MMS capability means that the user can send a multimedia message containing a combination of pictures, animations, sounds, videos and text. To take advantage of the picture and sound messaging, you must exchange files with another MMS compatible phone, and as previously mentioned, you will not be capable of recording your own video clips, although you can still reuse those that you receive from elsewhere.
Probably the biggest personal statement you make with the Motorola V3 is to select which colour matches your style: silver, black or hot pink (the last one presumably for the female user). However this mobile phone can also be personalised by changing the wallpapers, screensavers, or ringtones, and more of this content can be downloaded to the phone when you wish to customise it, so creating a new look or sound and giving it some special character. The phone is supplied with several preloaded themes, i.e. bundled sets of images and sounds that can be added collectively to the phone, and more of these themes are available for download when you need them. As with many other Motorola phones, this model is fitted with the easy to use MotoMixer™ ringtone software, which enables you to create your own unique polyphonic ringtones, by remixing new sounds using a selection of instruments and preset sound file tracks.
The V3 is Java™ enabled and so is able to run a wide range of Java games and applications. This phone also includes a 3D graphics engine, which means it can produce a better quality representation of graphics and movement, and this helps by making games appear more realistic. Three games are preloaded in the phone: Skipping Stones, Golf and Billiards. More Java games are readily available, and a large number of applications (for everything from leisure to business use) may be selected and downloaded to the phone when you require them.
Another important feature of the V3 is its integrated GPRS data handling technology, and this means that you get faster access to the network services, and an “always on” connection. The WAP capability also allows you to gain access to the mobile Internet, and to access the many information sites and useful services now available to the mobile phone user. An e-mail client is installed in this phone, which enables users to keep in touch with their normal e-mail correspondence while on the move. This e-mail client supports the standard POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols.
For connectivity the V3 offers the user a choice, between a wireless Bluetooth™ link and a cable connection via the mini USB connector. With Bluetooth you have the opportunity to exchange files and information with other Bluetooth compatible devices within about a 10-metre range, and this is fast becoming a preferred method for data exchange with mobile phones. Alternatively, a user may prefer to link up by USB data cable to connect to another device, such as to your home PC or PDA, and you can then synchronise your personal information between the two devices, for example in the phone’s calendar or phonebook.
With its PIM functionality the V3 contains several useful organiser functions, including a calendar, clock, alarms, calculator, and a currency converter. Among its other facilities there is also the fairly standard silent vibration alert option, and this model uses the iTap™ predictive text input software, which is an alternative system to T9™.
