Nokia 6021 is a tri-band candy bar styled mobile phone, which makes it a suitable handset for global roaming to most parts of the world. This model is very similar to its earlier stable mate the 6020, except the 6021 loses the camera and in its place gains Bluetooth™. Like the earlier model this version also has conventional styling, and it should suit business users who are looking for an easy to operate, no-nonsense handset - and any one else who wants good features and value for money. Amongst this model’s useful features are its advanced EDGE, GPRS and HSCSD data technology, Bluetooth™ connectivity, a WAP and xHTML browser, MMS multimedia messaging, video download and playback, Push-To-Talk, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, Java™ enabled, voice control (you can add up to ten voice call tags and 5 voice commands), and an e-mail client.

The 6021 has a TFT active matrix display with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, and this screen can also reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. The display offers users the ability to view still or video pictures downloaded to the phone from Web pages, as well as images sent to the phone in an MMS or as attachments to e-mails. The screen also provides the means to play games on the phone, and to view Nokia’s traditional graphical interface for selecting menus. One useful aspect when navigating the menus is the “go to” system, which makes life a lot easier by allowing you rearrange the phone’s functions into a personal shortcut list, so you may quickly select your favourite or most frequently used menu options.

Although there is no camera fitted in the 6021, being MMS enabled means this phone is still capable of creating and editing MMS messages that contain a picture or video clip. The phone is able to send and receive multimedia messages containing a combination of text, sound, and a picture or a video clip. As is usual, MMS messages are limited in size, and this phone supports multimedia messages up to 100 kB. For users who enjoy watching news, sport or entertainment, there is the chance to download short video clips, which can be easily obtained from a Web page, for example. The phone also supports instant messaging for real-time text chat sessions, and flash messages (i.e. text messages that are instantly displayed on reception).

On the side of the 6021 there is a dedicated button for operating the Push-To-Talk function, a feature that can be used if your network supports this option. PTT is an instant talk channel, and it is possible to set up direct two-way radio conversations over the network with your contacts. When the PTT button is pressed, the person you are calling does not have to answer the phone, and you are able to gain immediate access to them to start a conversation. You can even conduct conversations with a group of people who have compatible devices. However, you will need to take out a separate subscription to use this service.

Another standard feature of the 6021 is its capability for being customised, by choosing alternative themes, wallpapers, animated screensavers, colour schemes, and ringtones to modify the look and sound of the phone. More pictures, ringtones and other content can be downloaded, when required, from the many websites that offer these products. A further method of personalisation is to swap the outer covers of the phone, and different Xpress-on™ fascias may be purchased to give the phone a new appearance.

Multiple numbers can be saved for each of your contacts, and if you wish you could add an image of the contacts for use as picture ID in your phone book, as well as save a text note of useful contact information for future use. Another valuable feature is the ability to set up various caller groups, such as work or family, and a unique ringtone and display graphic can be used to quickly identify the type of call you are receiving. A total of six different profiles are available, which can be further customised to suit a variety of events and environments in which you find yourself - this means, for example, that you are not disturbed in a meeting and you can actually hear the phone ring when in a noisy environment.

The 6021 is Java™ enabled, a feature that allows users the option to run a variety of series 40 Java games and applications on this phone. With its Bluetooth features turned on, it is also possible to play multiplayer games wirelessly over the Bluetooth connection. There are 4 games already loaded in the phone - Backgammon II, Beach Rally, Bowling, and Puzzle - enough to keep you amused initially, until you want a new challenge. More games or applications may be downloaded from websites offering this sort of program, and applications like news clients and travel guides will run on the phone.

With its GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE data capabilities, this phone offers fast access to the network and good data transfer speeds. In addition, the 6021’s data handling technology gives users the benefit of an “always on” connection, and you only pay for the actual amount of data transferred rather than the time you are connected to the network. The phone’s WAP 2.0 and xHTML browser produces better quality graphical content from Web pages, and the phone offers good access to the mobile Internet, being capable of providing you with all the services and information sources you might require, such as news reports, sports, traffic information, weather forecasts, entertainments, business, shopping, and other online services. Another important feature is the E-mail client, which gives users mobile access to their normal work or personal e-mail services on the phone, and this client supports the standard POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols. The phone also handles the exchange of business cards.

Connectivity is excellent in the 6021, and includes the capability to connect wirelessly using Bluetooth™ (up to a range of 10 metres), or if you prefer the other wireless option you may use an infrared link and connect to IrDA compatible devices. Alternatively, the phone can transfer data via its USB Pop-Port™ socket, and connect by cable with other equipment such as home or office computers. Once a connection has been established with another device, such as a PC or PDA, then it is possible to synchronise information with that other device, including your phone contacts, calendar and notes. Synchronisation over the air is another possibility, using SyncML.

To enhance the phone’s usefulness, there are several good organiser functions available in the 6021, including a calendar, to do list, notes, electronic wallet, clock, alarms, calculator, countdown timer, stopwatch, and a unit and currency converter. This phone also features presence-enhanced contacts, which means you can share information about your status and availability with the callers and contacts that need to know where you are, and you can let them know when they may contact you. The presence service allows you to find out about the availability of a selected list of your contacts. The usual T9™ predictive text input and vibration alert features are also included.
