Nokia 6670 smartphone
Skip contentNokia 6670 is a tri-band smartphone, and as such is capable of global roaming to most parts of the world. It has an unusual candy bar shape, with two of its corners being rounded and two square, which is an indication that this mobile phone is a continuation of the style statement made by the 7610. One thing that users will be attracted to is this model’s size, which for a smartphone is only slightly larger and heavier than a normal mobile phone. If there is a criticism with the design, then it is probably the rather unusual shape and size of some of the keys, but then there are several models in which design has clashed with practicality.
Being a smartphone with a good selection of advanced features, the buyer will find lots of capability in the 6670 to perform many varied functions. Among the features on offer here is Bluetooth™ connectivity, GPRS and WAP technology, MMS multimedia messaging, video capture download and playback, video and audio streaming, MPEG-4 and MP3 players, RS-MMC memory card slot, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, enabled for Java™ and Symbian platforms, voice control, and an e-mail client.
The display on Nokia 6670 is a large and bright active matrix TFT type of LCD screen, which can boast an impressive resolution quality of 176 x 208 pixels and a capability to reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. It is a bonus for the user that the display is so good, because much of the usefulness of this phone is linked to the effectiveness of this display to support easy menu selection, games, applications, and viewing photos and video. Being MMS enabled means that you will be able to exchange multimedia messages that combine image, video, text, and voice clip, and you can send them as a MMS to compatible phones, or to an e-mail address. One of the problems with MMS is the limitation set by the network on the size of messages (maximum 100 kB attachment size, depending on the network), which can be annoying when you have just taken a great megapixel photograph. Luckily this phone can automatically resize megapixel images to fit the MMS format.
Inevitably, it will be the integrated megapixel camera that will appeal to many, especially those who enjoy taking photographs with their phone, and the 6670 has one of the highest resolutions available on Nokia phones (1152 x 864 pixels). There are 3 image quality settings of high, normal and basic available, and the photo editor allows the user to crop the picture as well as to rotate them, add frames and text, and to adjust the exposure. Pictures can be enlarged using the 4x digital zoom, and a full-screen mode may be selected to make the most of the screen area. A night mode is provided to lengthen the exposure time, which could be useful when the lighting conditions deteriorate, and, although there is no flashlight fitted, a proper tube flashgun (the Nokia PD-2) is available for this camera as an optional accessory.
With the 6670’s multimedia capabilities there is plenty to occupy the user’s imagination. It is possible to shoot your own videos of up to 10 minutes in duration, and the best video resolution available is 176 x 144 pixels, which is better than many other video capable phones. One interesting video feature is the Movie Director application, which enables you to create your own movies (or muvees as Nokia calls them). These are short edited video clips that contain video, music and text - a sort of short multimedia extravaganza. Using Quick Muvee you can choose a default style with its own set of font, colour, music and pace. Alternatively you might prefer to use Custom Muvee, and select your own video and music clips, images and style, and you can also add an opening and closing message. These muvees may be optimised for MMS and sent as messages if you wish - something to really impress your friends with!
Apart from the chance to download audio and video clips, the phone also has an onboard RealOne™ player, so it is possible to stream audio and video live onto the phone, and this might be a good way to keep in touch with news and entertainment. The internal phone memory is not huge at only 8 MB, and this would be very limiting if it were not for the memory card slot, which takes Reduced Size MultiMediaCards. The RS-MMC cards offer the user the ability to save lots of pictures, videos, MP3 tracks, and more of their personal data to carry around while on the move. A 64 MB RS-MMC card is supplied with the phone. The only negative thing about the memory card is its location, as this is one of the phones where the card is located under the phone’s battery, and so the back cover and the battery must be removed to change it. Therefore, there can be no “hot swapping” of memory cards on this phone.
Personalisation is another big issue with some phone users, and Nokia 6670 does not disappoint. You can change the themes, wallpapers, screensavers, colour palette, and ringtones, and these items can be easily downloaded over-the-air to the phone. If you wish, it is possible to add a personal ringtone and a thumbnail image to any of your contacts, which will make it easier to identify your callers, and you can create caller groups to send messages and e-mails to many contacts at the same time. Another call feature is the ability to set up profiles, so that the phone alerts react differently to various environments, events or caller groups. As a little bit of extra customisation, the user can change the outer covers with Nokia’s Xpress-on™ fascias, which will quickly give the phone a whole new look.
In common with many other smartphones, the 6670 can run a wide range of Symbian and Java™ games and applications, and an Application Manager is provided to make the installation of new applications as painless as possible. One useful application is Nokia’s Lifeblog, which automatically organises your photos, videos, text messages, and multimedia messages into a clear chronology that you can easily browse, search, edit, and save. Lifeblog is installed on your PC so that you can use it like a sort of multimedia diary of the items you collect on your mobile phone, and this helps to keep the memory free on your phone for new material.
With its integrated GPRS technology the 6670 benefits from the faster data speeds and “always on” connection that this offers. True, it will not give you the lightning speed of 3G, but it should be adequate for most users’ needs. The phone can access the WAP sites as well as the real Internet using HTML, so online services are all available on this phone, and the Netfront browser also has the ability to read PDF files. With the business user in mind, this phone has the QuickOffice software suite, with a document viewer that reads Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and Word documents. As you would expect, there is a full e-mail client provided, which offers the chance to access your normal e-mails while on the move, and the standard POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols are supported.
The connectivity options in Nokia 6670 include the wireless Bluetooth™, by which it is possible to make a radio link with other compatible devices within a 10-metre range. The other option is a wired connection via the phone’s Pop-Port™ connector, using a USB cable to connect to a computer or other device. However, for printing documents and personal data, for example from your calendar, there is another attractive option. The 6670 supports the direct connection of the phone to a printer by Bluetooth or USB cable, so that the printing of files, images and other information can be achieved without first going through a computer. When you wish to connect to a PC or PDA, then this phone gives you the normal capability to synchronise your calendar and phonebook, and there is support for commonly used programs such as Microsoft Outlook™ and Lotus Notes™. For those who prefer to perform a remote synchronisation over the network, this phone also supports SyncML.
Elaborate organiser facilities are provided in the 6670, including a calendar, to do list, notes, clock, alarms, calculator, currency and unit converter, and a wallet. In addition, this phone supports presence enhanced contacts, so that you may share information about your available to enable others to know when, where and how you may be contacted. A vibration alert and T9™ predictive text input are also features of this phone.
