Nokia 7270 mobile phone

Nokia 7270 is a tri-band clamshell cameraphone, and so it is suitable for global roaming. This is another of Nokia’s art deco style mobile phones, and it is designed to appeal to the fashion conscious user. Among the phone’s features are EDGE GPRS and HSCSD data technology, a WAP 2.0 and XHTML browser, MMS multimedia messaging, video record download and playback, video and audio streaming, FM stereo radio, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, Java™ enabled, voice control, active flip, and an e-mail client.

Nokia 7270There are dual displays on the 7270. The larger internal screen is a TFT active matrix LCD with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, and this screen can display up to 65,536 different colours. This is the phone’s main display, and it is used for menu selection and to view pictures and video you take with the phone’s camera, or to see images that are sent to you in MMS messages. A useful menu feature is the “go to” system, which lets you rearrange the phone’s functions into a personal shortcut list, to enable you to quickly select your favourite functions.

The smaller external LCD screen has a resolution of 96 x 65 pixels, and it can reproduce up to 4096 different colours. The outer screen displays useful information, such as signal strength, battery state, time and date, alarm clock, or calendar note alerts. This external screen also lets you know when you have an incoming call, and it gives you the caller’s name or number, if identified. It is possible to set wallpapers and screensavers to display on the external screen.

The Nokia 7270 has an integrated VGA quality camera (640 x 480 pixels), with its lens being fitted on the outside of the fold. There are two picture sizes available of Standard or Portrait, and three picture qualities of high, normal or basic. The picture quality depends on how much the picture file is to be compressed when saving it - this means that “high” quality photos will give the best image, but they also occupy the most memory space. Pictures may be edited if you wish, and it is possible to crop the image to a smaller size, or insert text, a frame or clip-art. Other camera features are the provision of a night mode setting, to help with the taking of photographs in poor light conditions, and there is a timer to use when taking self-portraits. Either the internal or the external displays may be used as a viewfinder when taking pictures.

This mobile phone has the ability to record video clips at a resolution of SubQCIF, and it can also download video clips over-the-air, such as entertainment or sports highlights, and these can then be played back on the phone. The 7270 has a media player that can stream audio and video directly to the phone from the network.

One of the important features of the Nokia 7270 is its MMS capability, which allows users to send and receive multimedia messages that contain a combination of text, sound, a picture, a calendar note, a business card, or a video clip. The phone supports MMS messages of up to a maximum of 100 kB in size. For those who prefer to send text messages, another option offered by this phone is instant messaging, which makes it possible to take part in two-way texting sessions with your friends and contacts.

When you are out and about you might need to listen to your favourite radio channels, and so it is useful that the Nokia 7270 has an integrated FM stereo radio. The tuning of the radio can be performed either manually or by an automatic channel search. Up to 20 radio channels may be selected and stored as presets in the phone, so that it is quick and easy changing from one channel to another. In order to get the best reception from the radio a headset needs to be connected, as the headset lead serves as the radio’s antenna. The radio may be listened to in private via the headset, or alternatively you can play the station through the phone’s internal loudspeaker, and share your listening with those around you.

Those who like to personalise their phones will have the usual opportunities to alter the look and sound of the 7270. You can change the themes on the phone when you wish to - themes can include a screen saver, a wallpaper image, a ringtone, and a colour scheme to customise the phone for different events and environments. More themes, and also individual wallpapers, screensavers and ringtones may be downloaded over-the-air when you need them. The phone offers the capability to set up different profiles to suit the user’s various events, environments and caller groups.

A photograph taken with the camera may be used as your personal wallpaper, or it can be attached as a thumbnail picture to a contact, and displayed when they call you. It is also possible to set up caller groups, each with their own ringtone and image to help make it easier to identify the caller’s ID. The phone has a selection of polyphonic (MIDI) ringtones that can play up to 16 instruments at the same time, and it can also play MP3 or AAC real audio ringtones. You can use audio clips recorded with the voice recorder as your own unique ringtones. For some extra customisation the phone can be given a new appearance by the use of the changeable snap-on textile wraps, which fit to the outside of the phone.

Being Java™ enabled means that the Nokia 7270 can run a range of Java applications and games. Some applications are preinstalled ready for the user, and two games (Chic Pinball and Disco) are also preloaded for you to play. The two utility applications that are preloaded are a Translator and Size converter. However, it is an easy matter to download more Java games and applications when you need to use new programs. The maximum download size per application is 128 kB.

The 7270 is also ready for push-to-talk services, and there is a dedicated push-to-talk button on the side of the phone for those who wish to use this service. The PTT feature allows users to have a real-time two-way radio conversation with one person or a group of people, who of course must also have a compatible device. All you need to do is to press the PTT key to make direct voice communication with your contacts. However, you will need to take out a separate subscription to use this service.

With its GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE data capabilities this phone gives fast access to the network and good data transfer speeds. The additional benefits of the phone’s data handling technology are that the user gets an “always on” connection, and you only pay for the actual amount of data transferred, rather than the time you are connected to the network. Apart from WAP 2.0, the 7270’s browser also handles XHTML, to give better quality graphical content from Web pages. The phone offers good access to the mobile Internet, and is capable of providing you with the opportunity to enjoy all the services and information sources that are now available to mobile phone users, such as news reports, sports, traffic information, weather forecasts, entertainments, business, shopping, and other online services. There is also an e-mail client that provides you with the same type of e-mail system that you have on your home computer, so that you can keep up with all your e-mail correspondence while on the move. This e-mail client also supports the standard protocols of POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP. In addition, for the business user, this phone supports the exchange of vCard business cards.

There are several connectivity options offered by the 7270. Wireless connections can be set up using the phone’s infrared port, and this allows you to transfer information to and from other IrDA compatible devices. For the wired option, a data cable can be connected to the phone’s Pop-Port™, and information can then be transferred to equipment that supports such cable connections. Once a suitable connection has been established, you may then use the phone to transfer personal information, or pictures and sounds, and to carry out synchronisation of the data in your phone book or calendar, for example. A further possibility is to perform a remote synchronisation over the network using the phone’s support for SyncML.

Many organiser features on the Nokia 7270 will come in very handy, including its calendar, notes, to do list, world clock, alarms, countdown timer, stopwatch, calculator, currency converter, and wallet. This phone also features presence-enhanced contacts, which means that you can share information about your status and availability with the callers and contacts that need to know where you are, or when they can contact you. This presence service also allows you to find out about the availability of a selected list of your contacts. The usual T9predictive text input is included in the phone, as well as a vibration alert.
