Primus PTL 868 mobile phone

Primus PTL 868 is a dual band mobile phone, and so will not work in the USA. This is a clamshell design that is available in a choice of metallic dark blue or silver, and it has stylish good looks. If not the smallest and lightest phone on the market, this model is nevertheless small and light enough to satisfy most people who are looking for a phone to put into their pocket or handbag. The keypad is both neat and easy to use, and its chrome keys contrast pleasantly with the blue model’s case. This is a budget model, which is being offered as a contract-free handset, and it is designed to work with all 5 of the UK’s major networks.

Primus PTL 868Among the PTL 868’s features are GPRS and WAP data handling technology, a voice memo recorder, voice control, and a selection of polyphonic ringtones. The drawbacks of this model are that it is rather basic in terms of its features, as it does not support Java™ programs or MMS messaging, and it also lacks Bluetooth™ and infrared connectivity options. However, it will probably be the attractive appearance of this phone and the GCS capability (see below) that will attract buyers to this model.

The PTL 868 has dual LCD displays, in common with many other clamshell handsets, and on the inside is a screen with a resolution of 120 x 160 pixels, which can reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. The internal display provides good visibility of the icon-based menu system, as well as being the screen on which you can browse the WAP sites, and play the built-in games. The external display is a small monochrome screen, and this gives the user a chance to check who is calling before answering the phone.

One of the main features offered by this handset is the “hotkey”, which is the keypad button you can press to gain access to the Primus Global Call Saver Service™ (GCS). The GCS service enables the phone user to make international calls via a London number, and this means it is dealt with at national call charge rates. The benefit of this service is that the user is able to route their calls via Primus’ own international networks, where the cost of international calls is a fraction of those that are employed by the standard networks. This Primus service should benefit those who regularly make international calls (either to business numbers or to overseas relatives), and it will enable the service’s users to keep their call charges as low as possible. GCS is a subscription service, and Primus claim that it will save users a considerable amount in charges, so that international calls may be as little as 20% of the direct dialling costs of the other mobile operators.

The PTL 868 offers a choice of different wallpapers to use on the screen, as well as a good selection of 30 ringtones. More content may be downloaded when you want a change to something different, and to personalise your phone with a unique sound and appearance. Four games come embedded in this model, to provide some light entertainment: Tetris, Poker, Boxman and Balloon.

With its integrated GPRS technology the PTL868 offers the user a faster access to the network services, and an “always on” connection. A WAP browser is also provided, which gives you the opportunity to use the mobile Internet, and to access and bookmark any WAP pages that you wish to visit.

The organiser features on offer in this phone include a calendar, world clock, alarms, stopwatch, countdown timer, and calculator. Other useful functions are the T9predictive text input and a vibrating alert.
