Samsung SGH-E600 mobile phone
Skip contentSamsung SGH-E600 is a tri-band cameraphone, and as such is capable of global roaming to most countries in the world. This model is a neat clamshell and Samsung say that it is one of the smallest VGA cameraphones available. Among the features included in this mobile phone are GPRS and WAP data handling capability, MMS multimedia messaging, video recording and playback, voice memo recorder, Java™ enabled, active flip, and a selection of polyphonic ringtones.
There are dual TFT active matrix LCD screens in the E600, and unusually both displays are capable of reproducing up to 65,536 different colours. So, the user gets the same bright and colourful picture quality on the outside screen as is available on the inside screen. However, the displays are not identical, and the larger internal screen has a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels, while the outer screen offers 96 x 64 pixels. The smaller external screen indicates the usual information such as the time, date, battery condition, and whether you are connected to the network, as well as to alert you about an incoming call or message, and any alarms you have set. The external screen also enables you to see good quality photos of your contacts for your photo caller ID, which you can take with the phone’s camera. The external screen is located immediately below the phone’s camera lens, and it provides a handy viewfinder when you take pictures of yourself. You can also take pictures with the phone in the closed position, which adds to its usefulness.
The E600 has an integrated VGA quality camera fitted (i.e. 640 x 480 pixels), which is a fairly standard type of camera that you can expect to find on a phone these days, and unless you are looking for a more memory hungry megapixel camera, then this should be good enough for most purposes. Other camera features are a 5x digital zoom control, a night mode and adjustable exposure settings for taking the best shots in different lighting conditions, and a self-timer helps you to put yourself in the picture for self-portraits. One camera feature that might come in useful for action photography is the option to use a multi shot mode, which enables you to take a rapid sequence of up to 15 shots. After taking a sequence using multi shot, you can then decide whether to save all of them, or to just save those that you like the most. Another option is to combine several shots into one frame, using the matrix shot option, and you can then save these as a single image. Some picture editing is also possible, and you can choose a suitable frame to surround your pictures
With its MMS capability, the E600 provides the user with the tools to create and send multimedia messages that contain a combination of pictures and audio, as well as text. You can exchange MMS messages with other MMS compatible phones, and this enables you to create messages that can be far more interesting, and with more impact, than could be achieved if only text were available. The ability to record and playback video allows you to capture some special moments, and to save them for showing to your friends.
As with most mobile phones nowadays, a certain amount of personalisation is possible. The phone comes preloaded with several wallpapers, screensavers and polyphonic ringtones, etc, but if you wish to add some new content to customise the look and sound of this phone, then you can quickly and easily download images and ringtones over-the-air.
The E600 is Java™ enabled, and so it is capable of running the many Java applications and games programs that are currently available. Four games come preloaded in the phone: “BubbleSmile”, “Fun2Link”, “Ultimate Golf Challenge”, and “Mobile Chess”. However, you are not limited to what comes with the phone, and it is possible to download more games and other applications when you wish to use something new.
An important feature of the E600 is its integrated GPRS technology for handling data. GPRS not only means that you get a fast connection to the networks, but you are also provided with an “always on” link, which has the added benefit that you pay for the amount of data that you actually use rather than the length of time you are connected to the network. This phone also has a WAP browser to access the mobile Internet, and there are plenty of WAP sites that offer a wide range of services to attract mobile phone users, covering such subjects as news, weather, traffic, entertainment, sports, etc.
For connectivity, the E600 offers the user a choice: the phone can connect wirelessly via its infrared port to other compatible IrDA devices; or, alternatively, there is the option to connect via a data serial cable, although this must be purchased separately as an accessory. When you have established a connection, by whatever method you prefer, then it is possible to exchange data with the other device (such as your home PC), and to perform a synchronisation of your personal information, in the calendar or phonebook for example.
Some other useful features in the E600 are the organiser functions included in the phone, and in this case you get a calendar, To Do list, alarm, clock, calculator, and currency converter. Also included are the standard facilities of T9™ predictive text input and vibration alert.
