Samsung SGH-E820 mobile phone

Samsung SGH-E820 is a dual band cameraphone, and it is another of Samsung’s models to employ a slider keypad design. With the phone in the closed position, a small number of menu and control keys are left exposed on the front panel below the display, but when the keypad is pulled down (with the aid of a spring-loaded mechanism), then the usual alphanumeric key layout is revealed. This split arrangement of the keypad functions means that you can use the mobile phone in the closed position, and you only need to open it if you must use the alphanumeric keypad or the camera.

Samsung SGH-E820This model is a version of the SGH-E800, and is offered as an exclusive by T-Mobile, although it only differs from the earlier version by the design of its case. This is a very light and small model, but it still offers a lot of features inside. Among the features included in the E820 are: integrated GPRS and WAP technology, MMS multimedia messaging capability, Java™ enabled platform for games and applications, voice memo recorder, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, active slide (you simply slide open the phone to answer a call), and a selection of high quality polyphonic ringtones.

The E820 has a TFT type of colour LCD display that offers a good resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, and this screen can also reproduce up to 65,536 different colours. With a bright and large screen the user gets a clear view of all the menus and images that can be dealt with using this phone. Pictures are something that this phone is able to transmit via its MMS capability, and so it is possible to create multimedia messages that combine pictures with sounds and text - your unique message will have more impact by using relevant sounds and pictures. The pictures taken with the phone’s camera can be used in your MMS messages, as also can the sounds and speech recorded with the phone’s audio recorder, and you can then send these to other compatible MMS phones.

An integrated digital camera is included in the E820, and as this is located on the underside of the phone’s upper half, the camera lens is only exposed once the phone is opened, so protecting it from knocks and finger marks. Although the best resolution from the camera is VGA quality (640 x 480 pixels), you can take up less memory space by using one of the three other picture qualities available: QVGA (320 x 240 pixels), QQVGA (160 x 120 pixels) and Mobile (128 x 120 pixels). Four picture quality settings are provided of Super fine, Fine, Normal and Economy. There are several other camera features worth noting, such as its 4x digital zoom, a photo editor, a choice of special effects (Grey, Negative, Sepia, Emboss and Sketch), a selection of picture frames, and a multi-shot mode that allows you to take a rapid sequence of up to 15 pictures in succession. There is also a LED flashlight and a night mode setting to help with pictures taken in poor light conditions, and a mirror and timer are provided to make self-portraits easier.

One feature that Samsung draws attention to is the fact that this phone has new technology designed to automatically increase the volume and clarity of an incoming call, in order to compensate when you have to answer the phone in a noisy environment. The phone also has a noise cancellation feature that suppresses ambient noise around you for the purpose of improving the clarity and volume for the listener at the receiving phone. Samsung claims that this is the first phone in the world to incorporate this noise cancellation technology.

As the E820 is Java™ enabled, it is capable of running many different Java based games and applications. There are two games embedded in the phone, Snowball Fight and Bubble Smile, and you can download more games or applications when you want to use something new. It is also possible to download more ringtones, and you can add more personalisation by finding new wallpapers, screensavers or animations when you want to use something unusual to impress your friends. Downloads are available from T-Mobile’s t-zones, which is easily accessed by the one touch dedicated button on the phone’s keypad.

The built-in GPRS technology allows you to gain fast access to the network, and this helps when accessing the mobile Internet using the WAP browser. There are now many WAP sites offering information and services to mobile phone users, and you are able to keep in touch with news, sports, travel, weather, as well as entertainments or business services while you are travelling around with your phone. One feature that has not been included is an e-mail client, although it is possible to download a Java e-mail application to view e-mails on the phone.

The E820 has the capability to connect wirelessly with IrDA compatible devices via its infrared port, or alternatively a wired link up can be established using a data cable. Once connected you are able, for example, to exchange pictures, sounds and data with a PC or PDA, and to synchronise personal information in your schedule or phonebook.

The organiser functions available are a calendar, To Do list, world clock, alarms, calculator, unit converter (including currency converter), timer and stopwatch. The E820 also has vibration alert and the T9™ software for predictive text input.
