Sony Ericsson Z1010 mobile phone
Skip contentSony Ericsson Z1010 is a dual mode clamshell cameraphone capable of working on the 3G and GSM networks (dual band). This is Sony Ericsson’s first 3G mobile phone, and among its many features are Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity, GPRS and WAP technology, video calling, streamed audio and video, video record download and playback, MP3 player, memory card slot for Memory Stick Duo™, voice control, speakerphone for hands-free conversations, voice memo recorder, Java™ games and applications, active flip, and full e-mail client service.
As is now usual with clamshell mobile phones, dual displays are provided to assist the user. The large internal TFT colour LCD enables you to view pictures and menus on a screen with 176 x 220 pixels of resolution, and as well as being a high definition display this screen can also deliver up to 65,536 different colours. The external display is an LCD that reproduces 4 tones of grey and has a resolution of 101 x 80 pixels. This smaller screen indicates when you enter an area with 3G network service, and it also shows details such as the time, date, caller identity, the condition of the battery, and song titles of the music being played.
The Z1010 has two integrated cameras included in its design. The main camera is located on the outside case of the phone, and this can take still pictures as well as video: the camera is capable of taking VGA quality still pictures (640 x 480 pixels) or QCIF quality video (176 x 144 pixels). The usual camera features are also incorporated, including up to 4x digital zoom, a picture editor, mirror and timer to help with self-portraits, and a night mode for taking pictures in poor light conditions. A second camera is positioned below the internal display, and this is a dedicated video camera that takes video pictures of the user during video calls. While engaged in a video call you can also switch between the front and rear cameras, in order to give the person you are talking to the chance to see the view that you wish to show them.
Being MMS enabled this phone gives you the capability to handle multimedia messages, which means that you can send and receive complex messages containing a combination of video, pictures, sounds and formatted text. Music on the move is also something that many users are now looking for in new phone models, and the Z1010 will not disappoint as it has an onboard MP3 player, providing you with the chance to take your music with you wherever you go. The memory restrictions in some phones is not a problem here, as there is a Memory Stick Duo™ card slot in the side of the case that enables you to store MP3 tracks as well as pictures, sounds, games and other applications. A Memory Stick Duo™ of 32 MB capacity is supplied, although the phone can accept cards up to 128 MB in size.
Another important feature in the Sony Ericsson Z1010 is its Java™ capability, which gives you the technology to run many different Java games and applications. When you need more applications, or get tired of a game, then all you need do is to download new programs over-the-air. This versatility extends to personalising the phone by changing those features that are available as popular downloads; you can find new wallpapers, logos, screensavers and ringtones when you need them, and simply download them to the phone. The supplied polyphonic ringtones sound good, but you have the additional opportunity to compose your own unique ringtones using the supplied MusicDJ™ software, which is effectively a 4-track music sequencer.
The data handling capability of the Z1010 includes GPRS technology for fast data speeds and an “always on” connection, where you pay for the data you actually use rather than the length of time you are connected to the network. There is a full e-mail client included, using the standard protocols of POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP, and you can send attachments such as video clips, pictures and sounds with e-mails in the same way as you do on your home PC. The integrated WAP technology also enables you to benefit from the fast access you have to the network services, and it allows you to make good use of the many mobile Internet sites now available. Furthermore, this phone’s video and audio streaming capability provides you with a live connection to information and services, such as news, weather, sports, shopping or entertainment.
There is a choice of wireless or wired connections between the Z1010 and other compatible devices such as other phones, PCs or PDAs. With its Bluetooth™ wireless radio technology you are able to connect to other devices within a 10-metre range, whilst the infrared port gives you the option to connect to suitable equipment that has infrared capability. The wired alternative allows you to use a USB or RS232 cable to connect directly to other devices. Whatever your preferred method of connection, once linked to the other devices you are then able to synchronise your personal schedule or phonebook, and to transfer the files and data that you need to use. It is possible to exchange pictures, sounds and video by using Bluetooth™, infrared, or cable connections as well as sending them via an MMS message or in e-mails.
